Youth @ Work thanks community for an outstanding response

Mayor John DeStefano, Jr. said he is pleased that the City met his challenge to raise $1 million toward summer jobs for teenagers.

The Youth @ Work Partnership would like to thank the following organizations for supporting the 2006 Youth@Work summer jobs program. With your support we were able to raise over $1 million dollars and provide jobs for over 900 youth ages 14-19 this past summer! The youth of New Haven thank you for investing in their future.

Youth @ Work is a public-private partnership of the City of New Haven, the New Haven Board of Education, Workforce Alliance, Empower New Haven and the Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce that provides youth with summer and year-round employment opportunities, career exposure and the skills to succeed in the world of work and in life.

The Mayor, during his inauguration, challenged the New Haven community to double the number of summer jobs available to teens this year, to 1,000 jobs. He charged Superintendent of Schools Dr. Reginald Mayo and Community Services Administrator Sheila Allen Bell with overseeing the effort.

“2006 was the best summer for youth employment in New Haven in the last few years after great efforts by our partners and increased investment by the public and private sectors,” DeStefano said.
